A Moment of Reflection Sparked by Television
Sometimes a moment on television can transport you straight back to an event that has stayed with you for years. Recently, while watching a Channel 5 documentary about Princess Anne, focusing on her lifelong involvement in sport and equestrian life, I was reminded of a particularly memorable event that R & J PA Hire had the privilege to support in 2015.
That event was the official opening of Jack Berry House in Malton, a purpose-built facility providing vital support and rehabilitation for injured jockeys. It was a significant occasion for British racing and everyone involved in the Injured Jockeys Fund.
Providing Professional PA for a High-Profile Opening
R & J PA Hire was appointed to supply the public address system for the opening ceremony. The event was originally planned to take place in the gardens of Jack Berry House, with guests gathered outdoors for the formal proceedings.
A full outdoor PA system was installed in advance, carefully positioned and tested to ensure clear speech coverage across the garden area. As with all outdoor events, especially those involving speeches and official guests, contingency planning was always part of the setup.
When the Weather Changed the Plan
Just moments before Princess Anne was due to step up to the microphone, the weather changed dramatically. Heavy rain set in, making it impossible for the ceremony to proceed in the gardens as planned.
Guests quickly made their way into the marquee on site, and it was announced that the opening ceremony would now take place indoors. With the schedule unchanged, the technical requirements of the event shifted instantly.
Rapid Adaptation and PA Reconfiguration
This is where experience and preparation truly matter. With very little notice, we needed to relocate the PA system from the outdoor garden setup into the marquee.
