The Venue and Atmosphere
Breighton Airfield, located near Selby, is known for its rich aviation heritage. Home to the Real Aeroplane Company and its collection of vintage planes, the site offers visitors a glimpse into the golden age of flight. As soon as you arrive, you’re greeted by the sight of hangars filled with lovingly restored aircraft, and you can practically feel the history in the air. Last weekend’s event took full advantage of this unique setting, drawing crowds of aviation enthusiasts, families, and photographers eager to experience a day of flying nostalgia.
The roar of engines and the sight of these legendary machines in action created an atmosphere charged with excitement and nostalgia. Every time a plane started its engines, the crowd hushed in anticipation, then erupted into cheers as the aircraft lifted off. From young children watching their first take‑off to seasoned pilots comparing notes on performance and history, the audience was a diverse mix united by a shared passion for aviation.
Highlights of the Day
One of the standout moments was the flypast by the Douglas C‑47 Dakota, also known as the “Dakota” or “Skytrain.” This aircraft played a key role in transporting troops and supplies during the Second World War, and seeing it gracefully sweep across the sky brought history to life for many spectators. Its distinctive throaty engine and broad wingspan made for an impressive sight. Shortly after, the unmistakable silhouette of a Supermarine Spitfire appeared, delighting the crowd with a series of graceful loops, rolls, and banks. The pilot’s skill, combined with the Spitfire’s agility, made for a performance that was both elegant and awe‑inspiring.
But the show didn’t end there. Several other vintage and modern aircraft took to the skies, each with its own story and unique flight characteristics. There were aerobatic displays that had the audience gasping as pilots performed daring manoeuvres, as well as formation flights that showcased precision and teamwork. On the ground, static displays allowed visitors to get up close to some beautiful vintage aircraft, ask questions of the owners, and take photographs.
Our Role at R & J PA Hire
At events like this, clear sound and expert commentary are essential. Not only do visitors want to hear the history and technical details of each aircraft, but organisers also need to relay practical information about schedules, safety, and facilities. R & J PA Hire was on hand to ensure every announcement was delivered loud and clear to all areas of the site.
We set up powerful speaker systems along the flight line, in the hangar areas and around the food and vendor stalls. Our team carefully positioned each speaker to account for changing wind conditions, engine noise and the vast open spaces of the airfield. Using our commentary unit, we provided a comfortable base for the announcers, complete with multiple microphones, monitors and headsets. Throughout the day, we coordinated with the flying teams and ground crew so that commentary matched the action in the sky. Whether it was an introduction to a rare aircraft, a reminder about safety protocols or a thank‑you to volunteers and sponsors, the sound was crisp and reliable.
A Day of Community and Connection
One of the things that makes events like this so special is the sense of community they foster. Local families, aviation buffs, historians, and tourists all mingled, sharing stories and experiences. The children’s play area was busy all day, and local food vendors served everything from burgers and chips to artisan coffee and cakes. For many visitors, the day was about more than just planes—it was a chance to connect with others who share a love of history and flight.
We were thrilled to support this event, ensuring that every announcement and commentary was heard by the enthusiastic crowd. It’s always rewarding to see people’s faces light up when they hear a pilot’s story or learn a surprising fact about an aircraft. Events like this remind us why high‑quality sound and communication matter so much: they bring people together and enrich the experience.
Looking Ahead
Whether you were there to see the Spitfire’s impressive manoeuvres or to witness the Dakota’s majestic presence in the sky, the event was a testament to the enduring allure of these aircraft. It was a day to remember, and we’re proud to have played a part in making it a success. We’re already looking forward to supporting future events at Breighton and other venues.
